What is ADHD?
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects children and adults. It manifests in distinct ways, primarily characterised by difficulties sustaining attention, controlling impulsive behaviours, and managing hyperactivity. While ADHD often begins in childhood, it can persist into adolescence and adulthood.
ADHD presents in three primary subtypes:
Predominantly Inattentive Presentation
Individuals with this subtype struggle with maintaining focus, following through on tasks, and organising activities.
Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation
Those with this subtype exhibit symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity, which may include restlessness, difficulty sitting still, and acting without thinking.
Combined Presentation
Individuals with the combined presentation experience a mix of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.
The exact cause of ADHD is multifaceted and may involve genetic, environmental, and neurological factors. It’s essential to recognise that ADHD is not a result of laziness, lack of willpower, or poor parenting—it is a legitimate medical condition that requires understanding and support.
